Desarticulan en Nueva York una red de juego ilegal

Treinta individuos y una empresa, implicados en una red de apuestas ilegales deportivas que movió más de 567 millones de dólares y operaba en Nueva York y Panamá, han sido acusados de corrupción y lavado de dinero, entre otros delitos, informó hoy la Fiscalía del distrito neoyorquino de Queens.

El fiscal Richard Brown explicó que los acusados operaban una organización de apuestas “increíblemente lucrativa”, que movía una media de más de 20 millones de dólares mensuales y tenía relaciones con los clanes mafiosos de los Gambino y los Genovese.

“Aquellos que participan en esas actividades delictivas a menudo usan amenazas, intimidación e incluso la fuerza física para cobrar deudas y con frecuencia aplican intereses usureros a los préstamos concedidos”, añadió Brown en un comunicado de prensa.

Uno de los presuntos líderes de la red, Joseph Fafone, fue detenido el martes en el aeropuerto de Rochester, al norte del estado de Nueva York, cuando se disponía a tomar un vuelo con destino a Panamá portando casi 24.000 dólares en efectivo.

Otros 17 individuos fueron detenidos este miércoles en Queens y nueve más en diversas localidades de Nueva York, Florida, Nevada e Illinois, en tanto que se busca a otros tres individuos, dos de ellos en Panamá, supuestamente vinculados también a esta red de juego ilegal.

Las detenciones son consecuencia de una investigación que ha durado algo más de tres años y ha permitido a las autoridades incautarse de más de tres millones de dólares en efectivo.

Las apuestas sobre partidos de fútbol americano profesional, baloncesto, hockey y béisbol, entre otros deportes, se realizaban a través de diversos sitios en Internet y por medio de números telefónicos de llamada gratuita.
